EBU develops new and experienced baseball and softball officials through rules education, mechanics training, mentoring and evaluated game experience.

Apply to EBU

Complete the interest form with your contact information, experience, service area and availability. No prior umpiring experience is required.

Orientation & screening

Attend EBU orientation, review the code of conduct and independent-contractor expectations, and complete any league, school or district screening requirements before assignment.

Rules education

Study the current NFHS Baseball Rules Book, CIF notices and local league modifications. Complete required online safety education and EBU classroom instruction.

Field mechanics

Complete plate work, base mechanics, positioning, signals, rotations, game administration and conflict-management clinics. New officials begin with supervised evaluations.

Season certification

Pass the association’s current rules examination and mechanics evaluation, document required training hours, maintain applicable insurance and remain in good standing.

Mentoring & assignments

Work appropriate youth and lower-level games with mentor support, receive evaluations, then advance according to performance, readiness and crew needs.

High-school readiness checklist

Final eligibility depends on the governing CIF section, school district, league and assignment contract. EBU verifies the current requirements before assigning an official.
